One of the best ways for children to learn about other cultures is through reading books. African American children’s books provide children with a window into the culture of their parents’ and grandparents’ heritage. This collection of nine books celebrates African American culture and the unique qualities of Black children. Each book features a powerful story with an empowering message. Children will learn to value their uniqueness and have big dreams. Each book will encourage the reader to think big and believe in themselves.
Young readers will learn about African history and how Black people contributed to the history of the world. Many of these books focus on individuals who made a difference. For example, the first Black woman in space, Mae Jemison, had a dream as a child to be an astronaut. She was encouraged and supported by her parents, which ultimately helped her accomplish her goal. Another book focuses on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose story was featured in the 1963 March on Washington. The book includes a history lesson about King, the march on Washington and many other notable people.
African American children books also provide an excellent platform to introduce diversity education to young readers. When parents share these books with their children, they help them learn about diversity and make it a part of their everyday lives. One such book, Little Leaders: Bold Women in African American History, was a bestseller on the first day of release. It features 18 trailblazing women who made history, and is a great way to share history with young readers.
